About two years ago I played bass in a garage band. The movable stage was fully equipped with drums, microphone, acoustic and electric setups, and a keyboard. I played for about a half hour to an hour total. The name of the band was "No Idea". I'm wondering if I can actually call this my first band. Not sure.

I have 'no idea' either.
LOL!
But seriously, you gotta start somewhere. It seems that most guitar guys start in a 'garage band' and some stay right there, and some move up the ladder so to speak.
That's cool!

Tom, I may be wrong, but instead of "Ampeg" might it have been an "Ampro?"
Nope - it was an Ampeg. In fact I saw one up at Gordon LaSalle Music in Southbride this afternoon - same amp.

In a sense that's true although I know some guitar players who have never been in a "band" so-to-speak. Local folk/jazz/blues players who just do their own thing.

You're right, Tom, and I may have taken liberties in my statement.
Yes, I know some guys who are very well versed on a fretboard and never took their guitars any farther than their front porch, so to speak.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Hey Papa John ! That means you must have played in the band with the 'One and Only' Skip Tuttle !!! Could this be TRUE ? "
Sorry I didn't repond earlier. Haven't had much time for the computer lately. Yes, I did indeed play with Skip Tuttle! And Ken DiFazio on drums, Jeff Sciarrappa on keys, and Paul McTigue on guitar. It was a blast to say the least. I was playing a Vox Super Lynx Deluxe through an Ampeg Gemini 1. The Vox was a copy of a 335 with single-coil strat-like pickups. Had the nicest neck. Boy, I miss those days.

That was everybody's goal back in the day!I can't remember who the other band was. I want to say it was either the Orphans or possibly Minus One. I didn't see the movie but I do recall opening for the Ramrods at a block dance at Immaculate Conception school parking lot. Chuckie Bean, whose Dad own Charlie Bean's music in Quincy was the bass player and played a Beatle bass. He was dressed in a uniform similar to what the Beatles wore in Help. I just thought that was the coolest thing. God, what great memories!

Is he still playing at all? Tell him I was asking about him. John

Chucky Bean (Now living in FLA) must have been filling in for the RamRods. His regular band was 'Park Street Under'. He even LOOKED like he should be Famous ! Minus One did an extensive show based on the Who's Tommy. I saw Steve Esdale (lead singer of M1) yesterday....small world! The movie 'Discotheque Holiday' also featured Freddy Cannon. It was amazing to see the original Stage again ! The RamRods had just started using Fender Showman, having sold their Vox Super Beatles to a Quincy band known as 'The Grenediers'. Skip Tuttle has battled health problems of late, but still has a great attitude and a fondness for the band that you both shared !

Skip Tuttle has battled health problems of late, but still has a great attitude and a fondness for the band that you both shared ! I remember Park Street Under! Their drummer, if memory serves, was Glen Moran, who, at the time, had the fastest hands ever! I can't swear to it but I think they were a composite of former members of the Dead End Kids, and Eastern Standard Times. Man, it's a thrill to bring back so many great memories! If you see Skip, give him my best! Got an email from Jeff Sciarappa about two years ago. Married, spent a bunch of years in CA but I believe he's living in Cambridge now. Still playing keys, but now he's into jazz. Kenny's a lawyer in Weymouth. He handled my divorce many years back. Not sure where Teeg is. I believe he's married, kids, and living in Pembroke. I've often dreamed of getting all the garage bands from back in the day together for one gig for old times sake. Never happen. I know some of them have passed on but what a thrill if we could! Thanks for the info. Made my day! John

We actually opened for somebody at the Weymouth Fairgrounds in 1970. I can't swear who but I remember Brownsville Station played there. Think "Smokin' in the Boy's Room. We couldn't see the stands at all because of the lighting but somebody told me the stands held fifteen thousand people. Don't how many were actually there that night but glad they didn't tell me that ahead of time. I vaguely remember the riots in the Birches. I saw the Dead End Kids at the Beachcomber somewhere in the seventies. I remember them doing "Bookkeepers Son" by Steely Dan and thought that was the coolest song of the time. I do remember the Nomads. How about the Techniques? Or Kahuna and the Mooners? The Cascades? Or Orpheus? Saw them at Weymouth North High. Or the Nazz? Tod Rundgrens first major band. Saw them at Weymouth North also. Man, is this bringing back a lot of great memories. Keep 'em coming! John
