Tim -
Wife and I went to Memphis a few weeks ago for a brief get-a-way. While there, did the Gibson factory tour (they have three plants; one in Memphis (for all their semi-hollow and hollow body models), one in Nashville (for all of their solid-body electrics, except the "alpine white") and one in Utah (for all of their acoustics).
Anyway, while generally impressed, was quite a bit surprised. Only about 25 employees and currently produce (the Memphis plant) about 30 to 60 guitars per month, depending on market conditions.
I guess I was expecting a much larger operation based on their "image" and "brand recognition".

Oh..forgot to add...while in Memphis with wife, we went to the famous "Beale Street" (where BB King's establishment is). After a few cocktails at BB Kings and watched a band called "The Will Tucker Band" (a teenager that's an up-and-coming John Mayer), we went outside and saw these guys (who were on "America's Got Talent"). Quite impressive. Threw a few bucks in their "red money buckets": www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAbHZmr-qY4

Oh, I can deffinately understand that.
Sometime you should go to the Lakland bass "factory" in Chicago and you would be amazed at how un "state-of-the-art the place is. It's one of those "forget aout what you think it is" places/ Because you can always imagine what it will be like,a nd chances are you're bee fooled.
It's located above an old tire shredding factory and has a couple handful of employees. there's a couple of them that are top luthiers and designers.
Anyhow, the instruments they put out are top fit and finish electric basses and the place has a deffinate "old school" feel about it.
About the only true state of the art machine I know that they ha is a "PLek" machine which will polish the frets.
