I have some old low-end basses I'm planning to refinish just to see if I can. One is stripped down to bare wood but I'll probably paint it because the wood grain isn't really right for a stain or clear finish. I have a compressor and a couple of different grade sprayers. Any recommendations for brand, type, finish coat?

John, if he doesn't answer here ... give Rick Celia a call at the shop. He has considerable experience on some of the old and new finishes being used. He's there Tues through Sat. 781 826-3632

Thanks! I'll do that. I have an old Univox Mosrite copy and a German made Ric-looking bass that I'm looking to refinish. Got them on eBay some years ago for short money. Got the Ric bass refretted and I've been cannibalizing parts from dead basses for the electronics and stuff. Got some Alnico's for the Ric and some EMG's for the Univox. Should be fun to refinish. Just what I need, two more basses, like I don't have enough already! John BTW, You seem to be very good at finding info on vintage guitars and such. The Ric-looking bass was actually a "Heerwagen" brand, at least that was what the decal said before I sanded it off to refinish it. Very "Ric"- looking in body style, two humbuckers with coil taps and phase switches. A very "80's" metal type of bass. I actually talked to a German woman who said the name didn't make any sense. A literal translation was "Mister Car". I bought it because I thought it was the closest thing I could afford to a Ric. I actually do own a Ric now but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have two, just in case, don't you know.
