I've read cautions about using one type of cleaner or polish versus others, depending on the type of finish a guitar has.
Is there a safe, general purpose polish that is ok to use on nitrocellulose, lacquer and whatever Taylor's proprietary guitar finish is?
At the shop I have a special polish for Martin guitars, another one for Fender and I am not 100 percent sure what to use on the nitrocellulose finishes like on the Bay States and others.
I know Rick has his secret, special formula that seems to work well on Taylors.

Safe and applicable to *all* guitar finishes?

Yes, you shouldn't have any problem with that at all. To be honest with you, I use 3M auto polishes to do the final finish on newly built guitars but for the sake of possible future repairs I would suggest the silicone free polishes. My favorite! this stuff is great for all finishes and really gives darker guitars a beautiful deep finish, and is also silicone free. www.superiorcarcare.net/3mimhanglaz.html?gclid=CK_hnqG-u50CFdFL5Qodsho6hQ
